Portland reaps rewards from the four elements
By Amanda Gonzales
An internationally known skratch DJ is always looking to add more vinyl
to his collection. So when Qbert was in town for the preview of his movie
Wave Twisters, and to perform, at the State Theater March 3, he
dropped into Enterprise Records, just down the way on Congress Street,
the afternoon before his show. Owner Bob Wirtz said Qbert bought about
25 records and was a “real nice guy,” even though Wirtz did not really
know who he was.
So what does a skratch DJ stock up on? “He bought a bunch of [movie]
soundtracks and dark sinister stuff like The Swarm and Four Horseman
of the Apocalypse,” says Wirtz. He and Qbert also spent time talking
about classical music, which Wertz adds, “Qbert didn’t know too much
about.” Wirtz introduced him to the famous German composer Wagner,
which Qbert also added to his stack of vinyl.
Before he left the store, though, Qbert got a chance to talk to locals,
one of whom invited him to a keg party going on that night. Unfortunately,
he was a no-show. We guess he had other plans.
