***1/2 Candiria

300 PERCENT DENSITY

(Century Media)

Candiria play the Asylum Saturday, May 26, with Unearth, Reach the Sky, and One Must Fall.

If you have yet to experience the mind blowing joy-ride that is a Candiria record, it’s time to enlighten yourself. On 300 Percent Density, Candiria once again stretch the boundaries of sonic possibility with their fusion of metal, jazz, and hip-hop. This is music for the mind. The title track sets the tone for what’s to come with a series of blistering riffs that flow seamlessly from one chapter to the next, leaving you numb — but begging for more. The third track, “Without Water,” begins with an impressive bit of lyricism that transitions into a great, stompy beat sure to get you moving. “Constant Velocity is as Natural as Being at Rest” begins with the signature Candiria jazz style they’ve perfected so well over the years, before dropping you into an off-time beat fit to rip your head off. “Words from the Lexicon” shows the band’s hip-hop prowess and inventiveness of back beat, and “Channeling Elements” is a trip through the musical brutality that Candiria can deliver.

Along the lines of their previous efforts, Surrealistic Madness, Beyond Reasonable Doubt, and Process of Self Development, Candiria continue to evolve as a powerful entity in the heavy scene today. They deliver a sound that is far ahead of its time, and do it with ease. They also continue to feature guest vocal appearances, here with Anthony Martini of E-Town Concrete, and experimentation with a vast array of instruments, including a breathing accordion, marimba, and some dijiridoo work as well. Not your standard indie-metal instruments.

Whether a hardened Candiria veteran, or a fledgling listener, you owe it to yourself to pick up a copy of 300 Percent Density. This is pure Candiria.
