OUT AND ABOUT
Smoke ’em if you got ’em
BY AMY MARTIN

Turns out moe. jammed more than just the State Theatre patrons on Saturday night. Less than an hour into the concert, bassist Rob Derhak announced a building-wide evacuation — seems there was a fire alarm. Rather calmly and with little complaint, the audience filed out of the theater and onto Congress Street, which was blocked off by fire trucks and police cruisers. Initially, we thought the clouds of marijuana smoke set off the alarm, which would explain the calm evacuation, but Chief Flynn, of the Portland Fire Department, assured us that a malfunction in the detectors caused the alarm to set itself off. Moe.-goers lingered on the sidewalk and street for nearly an hour before anyone and everyone was permitted back into the State Theatre. Because most people probably lost or threw away their stubs, there was no one checking for tickets upon re-entry. The evacuation may or may not prove to be a disaster, depending on whether the band were able to, or even want to, use it in their live/studio album recording event, of which Saturday was the second night. Good thing they played mo’ than one show.
