Portland’s Housing and Neighborhood Services Division is going ahead with its plan to turn the Sacred Heart School on Sherman Street into affordable live/work spaces for artists (see "Portland Has a Heart for Artists," by Sara Donnelly, April 8). On June 17, after more than two months awaiting the results of an environmental assessment, the department will release a request for proposal (RFP) which will limit development of the building to units for sale specifically to artists (how "artists" are defined will be left up to the developer). The former school building was closed in 2003 when the city’s school department ended the multicultural program housed here. Neighborhood Services Division director Aaron Shapiro says the building can house at least eight studio condominiums for artists. The RFP requires the condos to be priced affordably according to HUD guidelines.
