The Charge for the At-Large
BY SARA DONNELLY

The Portland City Council At-Large seat, which longtime councilor Peter O’Donnell is vacating when his term expires this year, is already a relatively hot ticket for aspiring local representatives. According to Portland city clerk Linda Cohen, five people have already taken out papers for the seat (they now have to gather at least 300 signatures a piece and pass them in by September 6 to run for the council) compared with only one person who’s officially considering a run for District 5. But those of you residing in District 5 don’t need to start developing a complex yet. So far, no one has taken out papers in District 4. Let’s all laugh and point at those jokers in District 4. Get in the game, folks!

But back to the At-Large seat — the people who are considering running are Carol Schiller, Loretta Griffin, Lisa McNeill, Rich (Angelo) Howland, and Ed Suslovic. You may remember Suslovic, he served one term as a Democratic state representative for Portland before losing to the Greens’ John Eder in a tight race in 2004. Loretta Griffin is the widow of John Griffin, whose seat O’Donnell won in special election after Griffin died. And Howland is a 28-year-old cabbie who’s spent much of his life in Portland. Howland already has a slogan — "Cabbie for Council." Others who want to run for the At-Large or District seats can pick up papers at the clerk’s office in city hall anytime before the deadline. Who knows, this could be your chance at greatness.
