BOOZE BLUES
A beer bully
BY LISA CRAIG

Twenty-two ounces of beer can beat you up. Sebago Brewing’s new batch of Bassackwards Berryblue Ale mixed with their dark, yummy Laketrout Stout is like a bruised eye socket, "black and blue." Similar to a traditional black and tan, a black and blue mixes light and dark beer for quite a delight, like an alcoholic-twist ice-cream cone.

The fruit beer, made with real Maine blueberries (no added flavoring), is an unfiltered pale, mild ale with a low hop profile. It has a pretty purple hue and white head. The flavor is light and tasteful, doesn’t overpower like enhanced blueberry brews.

"It’s not a blueberry pie in a beer," brewmaster Kai Adams says.

The black-and-blue mixture is interesting because, unlike a black and tan, the stout does not float on top, it mixes in with the purple haze without stirring. "It’s like an espresso with blueberry Italian soda," Adams says.

Black and blues are available in 16- and 22-ounce glasses at Sebago restaurants. The seasonal Bassackwards Berryblue Ale, which just hit the tabletops last Wednesday, will be available in 22-ounce bottles in about a month.
