Portland races set

The papers for the Portland city council elections are in and, sadly, the "Cabbie for Council" has withdrawn due to a career conflict. But there are still plenty of recognizable names in the mix for the At-Large, District 4, and District 5 seats (see "The Charge for the At-Large," by Sara Donnelly, July 22). In District 4, longtime city councilor Cheryl Leeman will be challenged by Stephen Lovejoy. In District 5, sitting councilor James Cohen will have to fend off Alvin Schulman. And for the At-Large seat, it’s a three-way race between Loretta Griffin (widow of former At-Large councilor John Griffin), Ed Suslovic (former Democratic state representative), and Carol Schiller (a community activist who has already been endorsed by the Portland Green Party). Could get interesting, kids. For those of you aching to hear the candidates speak and, hopefully, argue, the Portland chapter of the League of Pissed Off Voters will host a candidates’ forum on September 27 at 6:30 pm in the Reiche School Auditorium on Clark Street. Candidates from all of the city’s district races are invited. Or, if you’re already hot and bothered for (as opposed to bothered by) Suslovic, swing by his kick-off campaign rally in the Nathan Clifford schoolyard on Falmouth Street this Thursday, September 15, at 5 pm. Maybe Suslovic will go head-first down the slide if the crowd cheers loud enough. If you miss either of these events, don’t sweat it. The Phoenix will again provide our handy voters’ guide in our November 4 issue, just in time for the November 8 election.
