People’s Free Space celebrated the grand opening of their new location at 144 Cumberland Avenue this past Saturday, which turned out to be one of the best events I’ve attended all summer. There was free food galore, Coffee by Design coffee, Odwalla drinks, free loaves of bread, live music, performances, crafting, and information about Portland organizations everywhere. Parked in front, the Frida Bus (fueled by vegetable oil) was a popular stopping point for kids and adults looking for a place to relax and chit chat. The new space is adorably homey and much more suitable for meetings than the office-type space where PFS once resided. Equipped with a full kitchen, computer stations, futon, bathroom, and kid’s playroom, you may be searching for reasons to leave. Although I had planned to stay for only an hour, it was impossible for me to leave once the bands started. First up was Morning Miracle, who got the crowd rocking; followed by Boss, a poet/hip hopper, whose politically-influenced rhymes captured the audience; then Los Federales, who played an acoustic set; and finally Esperanza. Between sets, Emily Posner (of the PFS) held auctions and raffles in effort to raise enough money to pay two months rent for the new space. All in all, with a large turn-out of such good-natured friends, the grand opening was a success and most likely a foreshadowing of events to come.
