Still pining away for Fury 440, Swampwitch Revival, Redeemer, and Hell-Wheel Drive? Supersoul Challenger is ready to welcome you with open arms — along with raging guitars, gut-smashing drums, searing Southern vocals, and probably some beer in your eye. Tony Vegas, Jerod DesMoines, Johnny Walker, and Makers Mike Solak are back from their Hell-Wheel Drive, having picked up vocalist Shawn Winslow along the way, and "there’s a party on," as they say on their debut eponymous EP. Just check the six song titles: "Snake in the Grass," "Bad Georgia Rd.," "Cobrajet," "Smokeshow," "Supercharger," and "Barfly." Do you really need to know anything else about the album? When Winslow busts into a harmonica break for the bridge of "Bad Georgia Rd.," you’re going to be looking around for the Harley, black leather, and Miller High Life like you just woke up from an all-night bender only to find yourself 15 minutes out of Macon, naked but for your boots, and sporting a brand-new tattoo of a lizard on your dick. Dang that hurts. Recorded by Marc Bartholomew at Bandsaw Studios (also, or formerly, Tsunami Sound), the disc is raw, as it should be, the guitars raw and bleeding especially well on the huge solo that highlights "Smokeshow." This is definitely a band that could suffer from being over-produced and it seems they make the conscious and good decision to just get their live sound on disc. The only thing wrong with this CD is that you’re going to think it’s not nearly long enough. Sam Pfeifle can be reached at sam@phx.com Supersoul Challenger play an EP-release show at Bubba’s Sulky Lounge, in Portland, on Saturday, March 26. Call (207) 828-0549.
