This romantically linked Long Island duo — singer/multi-instrumentalist Vincent Cafiso and singer/keyboardist Tabitha Tindale — make woozy, enveloping dream pop in the tradition of Air, My Bloody Valentine, and Pet Sounds–era Beach Boys. That is, they keep threatening the sanctity of their lovely bubblegum vocal melodies with oppressive washes of sound. American Whip is the belated follow-up to their 2000 Joy Zipper debut; in Great Britain, where Cafiso and Tindale are minor indie stars, Whip was released last year, and their third CD came out this past June. Still, you get the sense that the time lag doesn’t bother them; though they’re committed studio rats — the Irish electronic artist David Holmes contributed to Whip, as did My Bloody Valentine’s Kevin Shields — their real interest lies in contrasting happy and sad. That’s why in "Christmas Song" they sing to each other "I love you more than a thousand Christmases" over wistful guitar strums and textured organ ooze. They know that some things will always be in fashion.
