Forty-six voices can make for a cacophony or spine-tingling harmony. Local choral group Women in Harmony mostly succeed with the latter on At Ten, the new disc they’ve released to celebrate a decade of singing and performing together. The group comprise two tiers of sopranos and two tiers of altos, leaving the listener with quite a bit of high end to deal with, which could have been better balanced out by the piano accompanist being a little heavier with the low end, but the overall result is still largely soothing. The song choices are fairly girl-power, too, with "59 Cents" (Fred Small) arguing for equal pay for equal work, and "Work Song" (also Small) and "Caffeine Blues" (Ruth Huber) combining to cement a blue-collar aesthetic. What seems to be the one original, Alla Bozarth-Campbel’s words put to music by choir member Erica Quin-Easter in "Water Women," features some cool vocal percussion to open, and more self-empowering lyrics as "Women walk on water/ We jumped or were pushed or we fell, and some leaped overboard." The CD-release is a live show that should really impress in "Songs of Peace and Freedom," performances that will happen Jan. 29 and 30 at Portland’s St. Luke’s Cathedral. Call (207) 749-7705 for $15 tix.

Fans of artful, witty punk are bemoaning the recent announcement by frontman Jeff Badger that the Hot Dogs have called it quits. Releasing a full-length and a Christmas EP over the course of three-plus years, the Hot Dogs want to say "thanks to all our friends and fans for supporting us since that first show at Free Street Taverna way back in 2001. We are sure to continue making music together in some form in the future. Perhaps a techno-salsa band? In the meantime, check out Brandon's band Taming the Shrew."
