Local Blues Brother impersonator and beer seller Greg Martens reports that he’s just back from making his Hollywood acting debut in a National Lampoon vehicle called Cattle Call, which stars Patrick Dempsey, Jenny McCarthy, and Jenna Jamison. High-brow fare, clearly. He played a quick cameo as "Big Louie" and, of course, there was a Stonecoast 420 IPA sign right behind him for the filming. The Sauce, formerly known as the Slurpees, checked in this week to say they’ve recently been in the studio with Jack Murray at Big Sound for their sophomore album, much of which will also be recorded in the old home studio. They’re hoping for a mid-January release for the full-length, though people who want a sneak peek can jet over to www.myspace.com/thesaucemusic. There, they’ll find "Girl from Providence" and "Ooh," a pair of silly, though technically proficient, pop songs, the likes of which populated their last album. Also, there’s an absurd bio, for what purpose "Sibilance" staffers don’t know. Look for the debut in December of a New Hampshire Public Radio production called Writers on a New England Stage, which will basically consist of writers reading their work at the Music Hall, starting with Doris Kearns Goodwin, the historian and often-guest on Meet the Press. What’s the "Sibilance" hook? Dreadnaught, progabilly purveyors, will act as backup band. Someone at NHPR has some taste, apparently. If you’re looking for an excuse to head down to New York City in a couple weeks, the Pubcrawlers have the gig for you. On September 16 they’ll rock out Connolly’s (121 West 45th, the home of Black 47) as part of Jivin’ Jones Records Irish Rock Fest, which will also feature the Peelers, Jackdaw, and Ice Wagon Flu (great name, by the way). It’s only $10 in advance, which is cheap as bones for NYC. Alright, we’ve got the heads up on what Billy Libby, formerly of Even All Out and very briefly of Why Hello, is up to. He’s gone solo, y’all, and you can check out his public debut of the new material on September 23 as part of an all-ages show at the Deering Hall (corner of Washington and Allen avenues). Plus, he’ll be joined by the brand-spankin’ Lost on Liftoff, Headstart!, and Third Floor View. It’s being put on by Plex Productions (run by some of those Sauce guys from above, we believe), and they’re billing the venue as "like a mini State Theatre." Also on the Lost on Liftoff front, they’ll be playing the Big Easy on the night before, September 22, for all you drinkers who don’t want to deal with the teenage set. And, not coincidentally, there’s also a "one time only" Goud’s Thumb reunion show planned for the Big Easy, September 16. Seems former Goud’s bassist Jeff Kral sat in for the Manchester Lost on Liftoff debut and got a taste for the old material. It’s sort of old news locally, but a reminder that Cerberus Shoal will be releasing The Land We All Believe In nationally on October 4 (see them with Barbez, September 8 at SPACE). Tell your out-of-state friends.
